According to a study released on Monday by Chamber CII and ‘Faculty of Management Studies’ (FMS) Delhi, the facility of ‘work from home’ for employees can be helpful in promoting more balanced geographical growth. According to the study, the ability to hire employees from different locations can reduce various types of pressures on India’s major metropolitan areas. The study titled Work from Home: Benefits and Costs: An Exploratory Study in the Indian Context states that Covid has created many alternative systems.

Working from home is a major consequence of changing the employment ecosystem. Since that time, many organizations have adopted remote and hybrid work cultures. The study found that the new model led to moderate savings in office rental costs. Along with this, companies have also registered reduction in the costs related to meeting and working with clients. The findings showed that savings in commuting and housing costs allowed for a limited adjustment in employee compensation structures. There has been a reduction in the stress of commuting to the office for employees, which has increased the level of work.

However, the study also found that working from home has made communication less effective and remote work is detrimental to teamwork. Studies suggest that remote work may hinder a company’s growth. As far as costs and benefits for employees are concerned. Participants believed that remote work was especially beneficial for parents and caregivers with young children. There has also been a slight increase in employee productivity. However, the study reported that some participants reported difficulty in separating work and personal life. Due to which stress has increased.

Many employees do not have the facility of a dedicated and distraction-free workplace at home. Moreover, flexibility in scheduling can be quite a hassle for them. Remote working has brought about a major shift towards performance-based monitoring. Additionally, with remote work, greater reliance on trust has become necessary to ensure employee performance.

Regarding the macro environment, the study suggested that remote work reduces a company’s carbon footprint and can help organizations meet ESG (environmental, social and governance) goals. This study says that working from home benefits both employers and employees, but it may cause some harm in the long run. These losses are related to the formation and nurturing of social, emotional and human capital.
